Ok so the math class has come and gone. Thank the lord that is over. I have sent my transcripts up to head quarters and I should get my piece of paper just about the time I get home. Lucky for me all that is done in the states and I don’t have to worry about it getting lost in this mail.

I ended up with a 94 average in that class after a lot of hard work and nearly going crazy, I wanted to kill the instructor and the world at times. But things are starting to look up. I have a break from all of that at least until I get home. I am going to try to start my BA when I get back.

Time seems to be picking up I have started weeding through some of my stuff. What I am going to use before I leave what I will need to keep and bring home. I am trying not to go crazy buying stuff. I need to get some things to mail home but not much. I brought one of my new uniforms to the tailors; they sent the size I was before I left so I have to have them altered because they don’t have these particular uniforms in stock here. The tailor is a rip off it cost 10 bucks just to have the sleeves shortened. But boy I will be styling. Can’t wait to get to wear those, they are a lot cooler (temperature wise than these old ones).

I will try to write once a week from now on because I am not doing much at night but exercising and watching movies.

Talk to you soon’

Last Class

Posted by jsoucy17 at 08:06 PM on August 02, 2009 Comments comments (0)

Well it’s the 22nd Wednesday night we just finished our last class before the final in math. I am so happy this is just about over. I think on Friday I will be jumping for joy when the final is over. This has just been really stressful. I don't think I will take any more courses if I ever get deployed to a war zone again. There are just to many other things to worry about besides doing homework and studying for exams.

I haven't been to the gym in so long. Good thing I am eating right or I probably would have blown up like a balloon. I have decided that if I can dedicate this much time to math that I can dedicate that much more time to the gym once Friday is over with. Starting Monday I will be hitting the gym hard. There isn't much time left to continue with the good habits that I started before classes began.

I am hoping that I can lose 10 more pounds before my trip home. I know its possible I just need to set my mind and body up for success. I will keep you all posted to what I am going through with this endeavor.

Have a great week. Talk to you all soon.

The Days pass quickly while the nights seem to drag on

July 10th, 2009

The Days pass quickly while the nights seem to drag on and on and on. It seems that because the days are filled with work like digging ditches and hanging conduit. The nights are filled with math that is sometimes frustrating. We have entered the last three weeks of classes to be exact only 7 more classes. I can't wait for this to be over its really crazy when you take a step back and really look at the things that we are able to accomplish when we just suck it up and do it.

I have been thinking of what things will be like when I come home, trying to decide if I am going to retire from the Air Force or if I will be extending my enlistment for another few years. If I do go on to achieve my BA degree I can have the military pay for it while I am still in. But if I retire it will cost me a little more to go through the VA I wish I would have known about this program earlier cause I would have like to already be done with it. I guess thats just wishful thinking.

Anyway there's only a few more ###### to go until I get home. then it will be another month or so before I go back to work for real. I can't wait for life to be normal again if you call not walking forever to get to the bathroom. I just want to wake up in the middle of the night and stumble out of bed and walk to the bathroom without having to get fully dressed just to go to the bathroom.

It will be nice not to have to wake up and run through exercises on how to react to the fireworks. the freedom of just walking without the weight of the backpacks or gear on your body. To walk down the street and not have dust flying around. I just miss wearing shorts and sandals. My feet are tired of wearing boots and walking 10miles a day back and forth to work and chow. The only thing that is good is that I am really feeling fit.

Well that's enough complaining for now. I have to study for a math quiz I will talk to you all later.

Digging ditches

Posted by jsoucy17 at 01:34 PM on June 26, 2009 Comments comments (1)
Hello All,

It's been a really long week. I have been really busy here. We were doing this project where we had to dig a hole for some water tanks, when the equipment operator noticed that there was a cable in his bucket. He almost pulled the wire right out of the ground. So now the cable needs to be relocated. Thursday we spent the whole day trying to dig the cable up to make sure that it wasn't nicked. We now have to relocate it. The ditch ended up being 25 feet long 4ft deep and a foot and a half wide. The soil around here is hard as hell and the top layer is like concrete.

I have been so tired lately because of math class, but it paid off I got 909 points out of 1000 on the mid-term. I can't wait for this class to be over. For that matter I cant wait for this trip to be over. I really miss you all so much.

Talk to you soon.

Time is ticking away

June 20, 2009

Hello All,
Well I can't believe its June already. The time here seems endless at times.I am really getting into the groove just about the time when things will be changing again. Its really busy here. There is a lot of construction going on and everything seems to need electrical work of some kind. So with the amount of work needed to get done and the amount of people we have to do we are stretched really thin working long days and in some cases nights.

I figured out that things are pretty much the same where ever you work, where you are in the world, civilian or military you always have one person that is your bad spoon. By this I mean that one person that seems to work against you instead of with you. I HAVE FOUND MINE!

As I have explained before you all probably know who I am talking about. I swear that his has a male period. It comes in waves, either that or his middle name is Sybil. He has pissed just about everyone in the unit off including the whole electrical shop that refuses to work with him. I think he does it on purpose. Like we are all some experiment for his thesis paper for his masters degree.

Any how I am feeling pretty good. Making progress with math even though this instructor is not as informative as the past instructors here. I will see how well I am retaining this stuff when I take the mid term next Wednesday. I study on average 4hrs a night and its crazy.

talk to you all soon.

Rest and Recuperation is quite a theory. I just got back from my R&R and it was such a great time if you call feeling like a chicken in a preheated 450 degree oven a good time and then being stuffed into the freezer to sleep it off. Okay let me explain, we traveled from Bagram to Qatar an extremely long flight on a C-130 I will post some pictures of what this looks like later. So when we left Bagram it was 75 degrees and it was night time, when we landed in Qatar it was over 90 degrees also night time. We arrived in the early morning hours I think it was 1 or 2am extremely tired from the flight and we still hadn?t checked into billeting. By 4am we got our room assignments and proceeded to find them, the rooms had 10 bunk beds me and 2 other girls from my unit grabbed the bottom bunks of 3 of them. Not realizing that the temperature was around freezing I went to take a shower. When I came back to the room with wet hair it hit me like a ton of bricks. I was so tired but I went to the USO to call home. When I was done with my call I found an open recliner and started to watch a movie but fell asleep and didn?t wake up until 10 that morning.

We were able to go into town shopping at the Souks (kinda like a mall) on one day and then we were able to able to get on a trip called the Doha Cruise. We set out on the gulf at 4pm cruised around the city shoreline and then we set anchor out by one of the man made islands and went for a swim. It was really hot outside and then jumping into the water was not really refreshing because the water was like bath water, very salty and it had lots of jelly fish. We had a traditional meal of lamb, hummus, salad and chicken kabobs. It was really worth the $25.00.

Then for the next few days we hung around the base, drank some beer, went to the pool, and ate a Chili?s. Then it was time to come back to reality of another few months of the same drill. But it was fun while it lasted. It actually recharged me to get the rest of this tour under my belt.

I had my first math class last night. Oh boy this is going to be challenging. The professor is really nice though, I anticipate a lot of homework and according to the syllabus there is a quiz every time the class meets so I have to make sure I stay on top of this one. I will let you know how it goes, but for now I have to go do my homework.

Talk to you soon.

The semester is over

OMG, What a semester that was stressful but its finally over. Just a suggestion to the younger folks don't 21 years to try to go back to school. It makes it a little tough. Any how its over and I didn't do as bad as I thought. I ended up with a "B" on my Philosophy final and a "B" for the final in that class. In speech I ended up with a 100 on the final and an "A" in the class. I hope that math is a little easier for me next semester. It starts the 1st of June.

So the Biggest Loser Bagram is going well for me I have lost 4.9 pounds this week. But this is only the 1st week and part of it has to be I am just eating right and exercising on a regular bases and don't forget walking almost every place.

talk to you soon

Hello Sorry its been so long

Posted by jsoucy17 at 07:35 AM on May 11, 2009 Comments comments (0)
Okay, its been a little while since I written or had time to write. I have been very busy on the job and off. Between the speech class and the Philosophy class home work I have been pulling out my hear. But the good news is that classes end this Friday. I am keeping up the grades with a lot of sweat and tears (literally). Maintaining the A average in speech should be easy I gave my last persuasive speech today. It went really well. The topic I used was why we should quit smoking. It was a lot of research (at least more than I anticipated). But I pulled it out now the only thing left in that class is the final exam on Thursday. It shouldn't be that bad I got a 100 on the mid-term. As for Philosophy it is a little tougher, the topics that we have discussed range from the morality of abortion, homosexuality, capital punishment. I am trying to keep my B average from dwindling away for the final on Wednesday. I really can't wait for the 2 week break before my last class for my Associates starts. All I need is this Math class and it will be done. I will be able to say "why yes I have a degree" but I also have common since. hehehe

So other than the classes these 10 hr work days are taking its toll on the body we do however get one day off a week to recuperate. Some weeks its enough but this week my body is aching. Unless its the matress I am sleeping on.

I have to tell you I never realized how close we really are to the edge of the gate until I was driving on the other side of the base where they removed some of the Alaskan barriers (similar to jersey barriers just 20 ft taller) and now you can see the local population. The children run up towards the fence as you ride by and yell at you "Soldier, Soldier please water chocolate" its funny when you just keep driving because we have been ordered not to through anything over the fence because there are Mines when they don't get a response from you, the tell you to F'off just like people in America. Kinda ironic don't you think.

We that's story time for today. I will let you know how things are on Friday with my finals out of the way.

Local Nationals

Posted by jsoucy17 at 08:17 AM on April 26, 2009 Comments comments (0)
Hello,

So you ask what are Local Nationals. They are the people that live close to where we are. Why do I bring it up you ask. Well I have been dealing with these young men for over a month and I feel like i owe them 2 minutes of fame.

We have 3 that work with the team (my shop) their purpose here is to learn a trade. Most shops have at least one, but some have up to 5. for the most part they are young in there early 20's. they are paid 5 US dollars and lunch (an MRE) a day to learn a trade. To give you an idea 1 US dollar is equal to 25 Afghan dollars what can you buy with 25 Afghan dollars it will only buy you a Coke.

These guys bust their asses for a 6pk of coke a day. I have started teaching them how to read schematics and teach them electrical terminology most of this is done by showing them parts then writing it in English and having them write in in Urdu or Dari these are the languages that they speak.

Its been fun for the most part but today they were like the three stooges banging into each other while they were working in close quarters. They try to sell you watches, sun glasses and scarfs. Its really a riot.

Well I gotta run for now talk to you soon.
